What To Expect
Call me and leave your name, phone number, and good times to reach you. If it’s more convenient, you may send me this information via email. It is helpful if you can suggest some times to call when you will have enough privacy to briefly discuss the issues you hope to work on in therapy. When I call you back you will have a free phone meeting with me which will last roughly 10 – 15 minutes.
This call is an opportunity for us both to work out if we should set up an initial appointment. We will talk about the issues you are seeking help with, you can ask me questions about my approach, and we will determine whether we might work well together. It might be that I am not the right person for you and if that is the case I will do my best to suggest other avenues you might like to explore to get the help you need.
The First Session
If our phone conversation indicates that I feel I can be helpful to you, and you also feel comfortable meeting with me, we will schedule a first session which can be remote or in-person. That first session will be longer than future therapy sessions (approximately 90 minutes) and will provide us both with more information about whether we want to schedule future sessions. If, after this meeting, you or I feel we are not the right "fit", then I will help you to connect with another therapist who works well with your issues and/or will suggest other types of help you could access.
At the initial session we will decide together what approach to take with regards future therapy sessions. Most therapy sessions with me last 50-60 minutes, although sometimes we will agree that slightly longer sessions would be beneficial (90 minutes). It is generally a good idea to start with weekly sessions. Dependent on the nature of the difficulties and individual therapy goals, most people would attend 8-20 sessions.
Sometimes people are concerned that information will be shared with their GP, employer or family members and that this might have implications. The benefit of an independent service such as this is that information does not need to be shared until you are ready to share (if at all). The exclusion to this is when I am concerned about risk to you or to somebody else and then I have a professional and moral duty to break confidentiality and to share the information. However, I would always discuss these concerns with you first and we would try to work out the best way forward together.

I am registered with a large number of private health insurance companies, but please be sure to check your own policy and excess before committing to sessions.
Conditions and Cancellations
I require payment at least 48 hours in advance of a session in order to secure the booking.
Missed and cancelled sessions pose some issues for both of us. First, the work of psychotherapy is sometimes challenging and when we hit a difficult place together, it can feel easier to avoid coming to sessions. I would prefer we speak about this intentionally rather than you cancelling sessions. Also, I hold your scheduled appointment time specifically for you and you alone. I also see a limited number of patients so that I can give you the focus and attention you deserve. It is extremely difficult for me to fill your last minute cancelled session at short notice. Therefore, I charge for appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice unless we can find another time that week that works for us both. If we are able to find another time that works for us, then we can reschedule at no extra cost.
